Jack lives in Wasilla, Alaska with his wife Patty. He graduated from the University of Maryland, College Park, Maryland in 1975 with a BA in literature. He spent five years traveling and studying in Europe and a year in the Middle East. He moved to Alaska in 1985 and became employed as an oil field worker on the Steelhead offshore platform in the Cook Inlet. For the past 20 years he has built longbows in one capacity or another, either with Alaska Frontier Archery, or Harrison Longbows. In 2000 he retired and recently sold the takedown longbow patent to Jim Fisk, who now continues the tradition of the Harrison longbow line as Harrison-Fisk Longbows in Fredericksburg, Texas. Jack has hunted in Alaska, Africa, and Mexico and all over the United States. He is currently working on Traditional Hunter, Unnecessary Fun and Hide Glue, Sinew and Selfbows, two companion books soon to be published as a complement to this work.

The book was printed at Bang Printing in Brainerd, Minnesota and is currently available. Allow two weeks for handling and shipping. It is a 9 x 11-inch hardback with a color dust cover. There are more than 1000 black and white photographs featured in the contents, along with 66 pages of ballistic tables. There are eleven chapters detailing the construction of composite longbows. In addition, Forward to Traditional Bowhunting discusses ethics and re-defines traditional bowhunting in light of hunting—the skill of hunting and not a choice of bow—longbow, recurve or compound bow.
